Nigerian Priest Dies by Suicide Before Forced Return to Africa

Father Benjamin Okwy Madu, 54, a Nigerian Catholic priest serving in the Archdiocese of Boston, died by suicide on July 2.
The tragic sin happened weeks before his U.S. religious-worker visa expired and he was required to return to Nigeria.
He had served as a hospital chaplain and a weekend Mass celebrant for a parish collective on Cape Ann.
An email message on behalf of Archbishop Richard Henning said the priest “tragically took his own life.”
Friends and parishioners said the prospect of leaving America deeply distressed him. "I sensed he was afraid of something. He never would communicate what it was." — George Lieser, parishioner at St. Joachim Church, told ACI Africa on July 14.
Days before his death, he reportedly suffered a panic attack on his way to celebrate Mass.
In a farewell letter, he admitted that returning to Nigeria was "not my wish," but said circumstances beyond his control had ended his ministry in the United States.

I thought DHS had worked something out with the USCCB so that foreign Priests and Religious could remain and not have to worry about being deported.

This poor soul lost his faith and trust in God. Suicide is never permitted.

THE POWER OF PRAYER: Joshua 10:12-13; Joshua said to Yahweh, “Stand still, O sun, at Gibeon, and you, O moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” And the sun stood still, and the moon stood still.

a) Ecclesiasticcus 47:4-5; Did not the sun stand still at his command, and was not one day made to seem like two? He called upon the Most High Sovereign when enemies were closing in on him from all sides, and the Great Lord answered him by sending down hailstones of terrible force.
b) 1 Kings 18:36-8; At the time the offering was presented, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and said, “Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that all this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God who turns their hearts.” Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood, and licked up the water from the trenches.
1) The Prayer that God wants:
a) John 4:23-24; But the hour is coming (it is already here) when the True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: that is the kind of worshiper the Father wants …More

DIE KRAFT DES GEBETS: Josua 10,12–13; Josua sprach zu Jahwe: „Steh still, o Sonne, bei Gibeon, und du, o Mond, im Tal von Aijalon!“ Und die Sonne stand still, und der Mond stand still.

A large part of the church nave has collapsed. ... The high altar collapsed into the rubble. The statue of the Virgin remains intact,’ Father Henry Díaz explained.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Peru's Junín region on July 18, killing at least five people, injuring more than 20, and causing widespread damage. The historic Santiago Apóstol Parish in Chongos Bajo was among the hardest hit, with its roof, façade, and centuries-old altars collapsing.
Father Henry Díaz said much of the church nave gave way, deep cracks spread through the walls, and the bell tower is now dangerously unstable. Amid the destruction, however, a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary remained standing untouched, which Father Díaz described as a powerful sign of hope. Peru's Catholic bishops have offered prayers and are appealing for support to restore the historic parish.

Roger Scruton argues that a forgotten but nevertheless fundamental link between religion and morals is to be found in the old-fashioned conceptions of piety and impiety, the sacred and the sacrilegious, the pure and the impure. He argues that modern moral and political philosophy, with its focus on the notions of equality, autonomy and rights, cannot make sense of the above-mentioned concepts and their related moral experience. If, for instance, as Scruton argues, the important institution of marriage, which all traditional cultures believe to be sacred, is merely understood in terms of consent and contract, it cannot survive. Thus, there are no good reasons why persons of the same sex or even groups of persons should not enter into such a contract. However, both evolutionary psychology and sociology fall short in explaining our moral experience in terms of piety etc. For these disciplines show at best that moral experience (has) provided a reproductive advantage, while leaving the …More

God, Goodness and Philosophy – Dominikus Kraschl

Rez. zu Harriet A. Harris (Ed.): God, Goodness and Philosophy, Ashgate: Surrey 2011. In: ANTONIANUM Periodico Trimestre, 2/2013, S. 501-505 This volume results from a conference held in Oxford, 2009 under the auspices of The British Society for the Philosophy of Religion (BSPR), entitled “God and Morality”. The volume is divided into two parts. Part I reflects “the relationship […] between our sense of morality and a transcendent cause”, while Part II deals with “the nature of God´s own goodness, and whether it coheres with other divine qualities and with the universe God has created” (9). In the following I will exclusively refer to the contributions of Part I, since I consider these to be of particular interest in the current philosophical and public debate. A popular way of interpreting the relationship between God and morality, especially within Anglo-American discourse, is to propose that some, or even all, of our moral imperatives come by divine command. However, so-called ‘Divine …

Goodness is neither external to God nor created by arbitrary commands. Rather, goodness is identical with God's perfectly good nature.

Messi, Malvinas's hero

If you cry, Captain, the things cry too,
the things you treated like an artist,
all that footballing artistry:
the corner kick, the spirited dribbles.
the brave, Argentine comebacks.
Then the World Cup reverence
of millions of hands and your gaze
fixed on stormy plays.
If you cry, Captain, know that Fierro's
sobs rolled down his cheeks,
a manly lament, pulse, adrenaline.
The gringo knew death and burial,
the athlete's bulging heart.
And Malvinas, yes, they are Argentine!

Cardinal Burke will celebrate a Pontifical High Mass in Amsterdam on 5 September 2026.. It does not state whether the Mass is according to the 1962 Missal or the postconciliar Roman Missal.

Leo XIV Visits Monte Cassino: Today, Pope Leo XIV made a private pilgrimage to the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino, where he prayed at the tomb of St. Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe. Entrusting to the saint his plea for peace in regions torn by war and violence, the Pope joined the Benedictine community in prayer before sharing lunch with the monks.

To celebrate the 1,250th anniversary of the Westphalian State in Germany, a performance was staged inside Paderborn Cathedral last year. This is one of the acts that was presented, featuring dead chickens wrapped in diapers. Faced with the outrage of the Catholic faithful, archdiocesan authorities apologized and stated that they were unaware of the nature of the performance that was to take place.
