Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev, 59, once one of the most influential figures in the Russian Orthodox community, has been reassigned to Brazil following a drug-related investigation in the Czech Republic. The Moscow Patriarchate announced that he will serve two Russian Orthodox parishes in southern Brazil. He could no longer continue his ministry in Europe for "objective reasons."
