The Three Franciscan Branches Talk About Merging

The three General Ministers of the Franciscans, Capuchins and Conventuals discussed in a May meeting about merging their orders. They want to “test” new forms of community and collaborate at different projects. The web-page says that unity is “within arm’s reach”. In Germany the heads of the three orders met on June 12th to 14th to discuss a unification and came to the conclusion that Pope Francis could “speed it up”.

and the boys on the ground could slow it down and even bring it to shuddering halt. The reality is that while we get on well together the different branches have developed different traditions and even different identities. This looks as if it is another way to avoid the consequences of shrinking numbers. Good idea in theory but avoids reality in practice.
