Worship Of Hindu Deity in Church, Bishop Apologizes, Vicar General Resigns
On Sunday Father Juan José Mateos Castro, the Vicar General of Catholic Diocese Cádiz y Ceuta, welcomed a Hindu procession in honour of the Hindu Deity Ganesh in the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Africa in Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa.
Ganesh is a well-known idol with an elephant head. During the Hindu procession Catholics greeted Ganesh with the Marian hymn Salve rociera.
On Monday Bishop Rafael Zorzona Boy of Cádiz y Ceuta issued an apology calling the event “regrettable” and saying that it could cause “pain, confusion or scandal in the Christian community”. He accepted the resignation of his vicar general.
