German Bishop: Homosexuality is Not a Sin

Father Peter Kohlgraf, the appointed bishop of Mainz, Germany, was asked by the daily Mainzer Allgemeinen Zeitung whether homosexuality is a sin. His answer, “The Catholic Church has never claimed that.”

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines homosexuality as the tendency to direct sexual desire toward another of the same sex or as sexual activity with another of the same sex. The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls this "acts of grave depravity", which "under no circumstances can they be approved” (CCC 2357).

Kohlgraf will be consecrated a bishop on August 27.

'Homosexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction or sexual behavior between members of the same sex or gender.'

Father Peter Kohlgraf leaves the laity with a smorgasbord of choices as to his statement. Confusione regnat!

The bishop-elect is absolutely correct - being homosexual, the homosexual inclination, is not a sin. The Church does not teach that. It is an intrinsically disordered nature, but not a sin. It IS a sin to impugn a priest with a veiled calumny for teaching the truth, no matter how much you may not personally approve of his election to bishop, or no matter how much you hate that part of the truth. … More

Since it's biologically impossible for two men to have sex with each other, the proper question is "is sodomy a sin?". But you'll notice the "Bishop" didn't make clear that distinction.

I don't know, @Hugh2 ... I think you're making a generalization saying "many" homosexuals have desires through "no fault of their own." For instance, anyone with a television or even a computer likely has not done all they can to "avoid the near occasion of sin". I'm not denying their struggle,

If the priest is saying that merely having temptations to homosexual acts is not itself a sin, then this is orthodox Catholic teaching. We all experience temptations, and are not sinful in doing so, unless, of course we deliberately invite them.

If he's saying that submitting to those temptations to homosexual acts is not sinful according to the Church, then he's uttering heresy.

Who appointed this apostate? Oh! Yes, the humble Pope Francis. Birds of a feather.....

@Jungerheld: The problem is not your confusion it is "Their"confusion. They do not know that God made them Male and Female and God does not make mistakes. The mistake is not knowing GOD and not knowing (herein confusion) what a man and a woman are!

Reminder to self: KEEP MY CHILDREN AND FAMILY FAR, FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THIS MAN AND ANY church THAT HE HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH.
In short I would expect an answer like this from a participant in homosexual acts!

Sin? No such thing in the Church anymore. That's so old school!

No shortage of Judas's these days!

...and so the Catholic Church would say that same-sex attraction is not a sin, right? That has always been my understanding, that a person is not "sinful" if they struggle with same-sex attraction, but it's "sexual activity with another of the same sex" that is sinful. In other words, would someone with same-sex attraction that lives a chaste life still refer to themselves as "homosexual"? I'm a … More

Nothing to worry about, Kohlgraf's nomination must be approved by Pope Francis... oh?
