Nun's killer sentenced to 40 years
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The man who murdered a nun nearly four years ago was sentenced Friday to 40 years in federal prison under the terms of a plea deal.
Had the case against Reehahlio Carroll murdering Sister Marguerite Bartz gone to trial, he could have faced life in prison of convicted.
But the victim’s family and fellow nuns told prosecutors they didn't want that and asked for the plea deal. That paved the way for a 40-year sentence for Carroll.
On Friday two sisters including Sister Mary Hottenroth broke down crying as they told Carroll they forgive him.
“I know when I said it got very hard but I know that's what Sister Marguerite would want and that’s what God would want to,” Hottenroth said.
Hottenroth also told Carroll she will be praying for him.
It was Hottenroth who found Bartz dead in a pool of blood inside her convent home north of Gallup in November 2009.
