Blessed Tommaso of Celano
Profile
One of the first spiritual students of Saint Francis of Assisi, Tommaso joined the Order c.1215. Priest. Assigned to missionary work to spread Franciscan spirituality and houses in Germany from 1221 to 1223. He was present at both the death and the canonization of Saint Francis. He was a poet and is the probable author of the hymn Dies Irae. Wrote a biography of Saint Francis, and one of Saint Clare of Assisi. Helped found monasteries in Celano, Italy and Tagliacozzo, Italy. He spent his final years as spiritual director of the Poor Clare convent in Tagliacozzo.
