One of nine children born to Vicente Esteve and Donna Josefa Flors, Julio was baptized at the age of one day. He joined the Capuchins on 15 September 1913, taking the name Buenaventura, and making his final profession on 18 September 1918. After studying at the Gregorian University, he was ordained a priest on 26 March 1921. Father Buenaventura taught philosophy and canon law at the Orihuela theology institute, and became well-known preacher, lecturer and spiritual director. Martyred in the Spanish Civil War.
