In the New Testament the word is synonymous with the evil spirit, and in English versions of the Bible is rendered “devil” and consequently designates a maleficent being, a meaning not necessarily implied in the original word “demon.” One possessed or controlled by an evil spirit is a demoniac, or energumen.
