Titular bishop of Auca and auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina on 20 May 1992. Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires on 3 June 1997, and Metropolitan archbishop on 28 February 1998. Elevated to Cardinal-Priest of San Roberto Bellarmino on 21 February 2001 by Pope John Paul II. President of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina. Known for his humble lifestyle, eschewing all the trappings of his position that he could. Chosen 266th pope.
