Psalm 143, i
The psalmist praises God and prays to be delivered from his enemies.

Blessed be the Lord my God, who teaches my hands to fight, and my fingers to war. My mercy and my refuge: my support and my deliverer. My protector, and I have hoped in him: who subdues my people under me. Lord, what is man, that you should reveal yourself to him? Or the son of man that you should take account of him? Man who is merely a breath, his days pass away like a shadow. Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down: touch the mountains and they shall smoke. Send forth lightning and you shall scatter them: send out your arrows and you shall rout them. Stretch forth your hand from on high, rescue me and draw me out from the mighty waters, from the hands of alien foes.

Amen. ANTIPHON 1. Benedictus Dominus, susceptor meus, et liberator meus. ANTIPHON 2. Beatus populus, cuius Dominus Deus eius.

Whose mouths have spoken lies and whose right hand is a right hand of wickedness. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Ant. Blessed be the Lord, my support and my deliverer. Ant. Blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

Psalm 143, ii
No worldly happiness is to be compared with that of serving God.

Deus, canticum novum cantabo tibi: * in psalterio decachordo psallam tibi. Quorum filii, sicut novell plantationis * in iuventute sua. Gloria Patri ... ANTIPHON 2. Beatus populus, cuius Dominus Deus eius.

I will sing a new song to you, O God: upon the ten-stringed harp I will sing praises to you. Who gives victory to kings: who has rescued David your servant from the cruel sword: deliver me. And rescue me from the hands of alien foes, whose mouths have spoken lies and whose right hand is a right hand of wickedness. Their sons are as new plants in their youth. Their daughters decked out, adorned like a temple. Their storehouses full, flowing from one into another. Their sheep fruitful in young, abounding when they go forth: their cattle fat. There is no breach of wall, nor passage, nor crying out in their streets. They have called the people blessed that have these things: rather, blessed is the people whose God is the Lord. Glory be ... Ant. Blessed is the people whose God is the Lord..

ANTIPHON 3.

Ant. The Lord is great, and greatly to be praised, and to his greatness there is no end.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, patient and abounding in mercy. The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all that he has made. Let all your works, O Lord, praise you, and let your saints praise you.

Gloriam regni tui dicent: * et potentiam tuam loquentur: Ut notam faciant filiis hominum potentiam tuam: * et gloriam magnificenti regni tui. The Lord is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works.

Psalm 144, iii Fidelis Dominus in omnibus verbis suis: * et sanctus in omnibus operibus suis. Oculi omnium in te sperant, Domine: * et tu das escam illorum in tempore opportuno. Aperis tu manum tuam: * et imples omne animal benedictione. Iustus Dominus in omnibus viis suis: * et sanctus in omnibus operibus suis. Prope est Dominus omnibus invocantibus eum: * omnibus invocantibus eum in veritate. The Lord is close to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of all who fear him, and he will hear their cry and save them. The Lord preserves all those who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever. Glory be ... Ant.
