Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City was elected president of the US bishops' conference on Tuesday. This was widely expected given his role as conference secretary and his long-standing membership of various committees. Coakley won by only 128 to 109 votes over Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas. The surprise was how close Flores came to Coakley. Both Coakley and Flores, who serves a border diocese, are champions for illegal immigrants. Leo XIV has removed Archbishop Francisco Ozoria, 73, of Santo Domingo from all administrative and financial responsibilities of the Archdiocese. In a letter shared with Panorama.com.do on Wednesday, Ozoria said the newly installed coadjutor archbishop, Carlos Tomás Morel Diplán, has been granted exclusive authority over diocesan assets, economic affairs, clergy management, and church personnel. Archbishop Ozoria, explained that he had requested a coadjutor himself – but only to ensure a smooth transition in the two years before his retirement. However, he expressed surprise that he was left with “only the title” of Metropolitan Archbishop while losing governing power. According to Sulpicius’ account, not long after St. Martin established a monastery in Ligugé (five miles south of Poitiers), a catechumen joined the monks in Ligugé for instruction in the faith. While St. Martin was away travelling for three days, the unbaptised catechumen came down with a high fever and died. His body lay lifeless in one of the cells, awaiting burial.
