"But, being caught and brought to the gallows, he hung for three days and could not die. And when he called to those passing by and asked them to bring a priest, one came with the judge and the people and he was taken down from the gallows.
Then said he that it was the Blessed Virgin who kept him alive ; and so he was set free, and afterwards he finished his life in praiseworthy fashion.”

“Chapter IV
The Virgin Mother delivered a certain monk devoted to her from the Devil and also converted him from the habit of drunkenness.
The story goes that a monk devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary having entered the cellar of the abbey, so soaked himself in strong wine that he soon became senseless. The Majesty of God, beholding the nature of his infinite perfections, their virtue and efficacy operating with magnificence, saw that it was just and most proper, and, as it were, a duty and a necessity, to communicate Himself and to follow that inclination of imparting and exercising his liberality and mercy, by distributing outside of Himself with magnificence the plenitude of the infinite treasures, contained in the Divinity. "It was for Christ crucified that St. Martin worked. Are you working for the same Lord?"

‘Lives of the Saints for every day in a year’ by J.G. Shea; 1887; November 8-13 ; pages 463-468

“NOVEMBER 8.-THE FEAST OF THE HOLY RELICS.
PROTESTANTISM pretends to regard the veneration which the Church pays to the relics of the Saints as a sin, and contends that this pious practice is a remnant of paganism.
