Doctor Veritatis.

"Doctors prescribe medicine to relieve pain and cure sickness; teachers do something similar by dispensing truth, the only medicine that will cure the sickness of ignorance... Ignorance of truth or lack of education makes life intolerable and dangerous, and society, recognising this, encourages systems of public and private education. Those who reach the pinnacle of the teaching profession are rewarded with the coveted title of 'Doctor'... The profession which deals not only with man's health and education, but with his eternal destiny as well, is beyond question one of the highest. The world is a dark place for those who know nothing of its Lord and Creator, or about God's loving plan for man's salvation. When ignorance spills over into areas where justice and morality should prevail, anarchy is most likely to result. To cope with 'spiritual illness, or ignorance' then there must be those who teach in and out of season the important lessons of right and wrong, of good and evil, sin and grace, heaven and hell. St Dominic fits into this picture perfectly. These were the truths he dispensed to his contemporaries. Society needs good teachers, good doctors, good priests who will teach succeeding generations the truth about God, about man, and this world." – Fr Richard Murphy OP This painting of St Dominic in Hispanic doctoral robes, teaching an assemblage of cardinals and grandées, is in the church of Santo Domingo in Puebla, Mexico. The quotation on the book he holds is from 2 Corinthians 4:6, "For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God".
