"Today the Order commemorates those martyrs of China whom nothing could separate from the love of Christ, who confessed the faith in the 17th and 18th centuries, to the shedding of their blood for Christ. Between 1648 and 1748, the following suffered a glorious martyrdom: Francis de Capillas, the proto-martyr of that land (d. 1648), beatified by Saint Pius X in 1909; two bishops, Peter Sanz (d. 1747) and Francis Serrano (d. 1748), also suffered martyrdom, along with the priests Joachim Royo, John Alcober and Francis Diaz (d. 1748). These were beatified by Leo XIII on 14 May 1893, and all of these martyrs of China were canonised by John Paul II on 1 October 2000." Detail from the east wall painting of the chapel of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC. Depicted are the two martyred bishops, Peter Sanz OP and Francis Serrano OP.
