Blessed John, who was born in Pisa in 1353, first adopted the career of a soldier. He soon left it to work solely for the salvation of his soul, and entered the Third Order. He was a model of recollectedness and penance. He used to chastise himself with an iron chain, and was not ashamed to seek alms for the poor. He instituted the Society of Flagellants, whose mission it was to succour the more wretched among the poor, and to supply their hidden wants.
