Ceiling fresco from the Vatican Museum which depicts St Ambrose defending Milan from barbarian attacks. However, it seems to be legendary as I can find no reference to the actual occurrence. Nevertheless, St Ambrose is often shown with a whip because of the force with which he opposed the Arian heresy. Today is his feast day.
