Salve Sancta Parens.

"Hail, holy Parent, that did bring forth the King who rules Heaven and earth for ever and ever" - Introit from the Common of the Virgin Mary. Today, 8 September, is the feast of the Virgin's birth, and she is one of only three people whose birthday is kept in the Church; the other two are St John the Baptist and Christ himself. Mary's birth is important because her birth heralded the dawn of our salvation as Providence made her to be the Mother of Christ, God himself. This retable is from the Dominican priory in Dubrovnik by Francesco di Maria. It was painted c.1680.
