For particular grave crimes clerics were traditionally formally degraded, their vestments stripped off of them publicly, their palms scraped w/ glass or a knife to symbolically remove the oils of consecration & then turned over to the secular arm for trial & possible execution.

This reminds me of the late Scottish Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who in 2013 was removed from ministry due to the surfacing of reports he’d harassed and been involved with seminarians.
