August 18 – Saint Helena | The Empress Who Searched for the Cross of Christ
On August 18, the Church celebrates Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, Roman empress, great benefactor of Christians, and the pilgrim whose memory remains closely associated with the discovery of the True Cross of Christ. Born around 250, probably in Drepanum in Bithynia, Helena came from relatively humble origins. Her life changed when she became the companion of Constantius Chlorus, with whom she had a son: Constantine. When political ambitions led Constantius to separate from her, Helena experienced a long period away from public prominence. After Constantine's rise to power, however, she returned to an important position and eventually received the prestigious title of Augusta. After embracing Christianity as an adult, Helena used her wealth and influence in the service of her faith. She assisted the poor, prisoners, exiles, and people condemned to labor in the mines.
