The Lone Star Tick, which is the main carrier of Alpha Gal, is common where I live. This is cattle country, and we have lots of woods where deer (and ticks) flourish. I know about a dozen people who have had been bitten by a tick carrying Alpha Gal. Those cases occurred 4 or 5 years ago. I don't hear of too many new cases around here, and maybe that's because tick control/avoidance is now on everybody's mind. The infected people had a terrible time at first, but they have all gradually improved. So, it actually doesn't seem to be "for life" that they have to be extremely careful about what they eat. The tricky aspect is that they also have this severe allergic reaction to milk, not just to red meat. Milk is in everything, so they can't even eat bread unless they bake it themselves without milk. There is a small device that the local acupuncture doctor inserts in their ear, which calms symptoms tremendously. Some people find relief by taking allergy medicine, such as Claritin or Allegra. It's not surprising that a lot of people around here think this disease came from government agencies seeking to drive the cattle farmers out of business.
