Vatican.va Forges Scandalous Prayer of John Paul II

Vatican.va that contains an archive of speeches of recent popes, altered the prayer delivered by Pope John Paul II in March 2000 in Wadi al-Kharrar, Jordan, in all languages.
John Paul II concluded the prayer with the following words: "May Saint John the Baptist protect Islam."
Unsurprisingly, this caused a huge scandal at the time.
Archive.org has saved screenshots of the relevant files in different languages up to 10 February 2026.
The new, fabricated version on Vatican.va, which John Paul II never uttered, reads: "May Saint John the Baptist protect this land."

Pray only for their conversion to Catholicism, not for the increase of their heretical cult.

@john333 The school of "art' from which that monstrosity came from was condemned by the Roman Catholic Church and resurrected by JP2 a progressive modernist. It is properly called the "Broken Cross." Behind the Contorted Papal Cross by Marian Horvat

Take one look at his staff Jesus looks like emaciated starving weakling not a man who worked hard all his life . Bad art inspires bizarre theology
JPII a modernist at heart

The reference to Islam is still in the English, French, and Italian on the current Vatican website. It seems to be absent in the German, Portuguese, and Spanish.

@V.R.S. We have heard long before AI the big scandal of John Paul II saying "protect Islam".

V.R.S.

Yes, you did because Vatican published such a scandalous text. And now Vatican changes their minds what was there i.e. that it was not "islam" but "this land" - which, to be honest, makes more sense in the context.

V.R.S.

The change is sudden after all these years but... only the truth is interesting. The problem is: which version is correct - to establish it one has to check the original video/audio/broadcast and 2000 press releases (including e.g. the speech text - originally in English - in L'Osservatore Romano).
For example here sb claims (February video) it was the long term Vatican error corrected allegedly this year (unfortunately do not placing links for the source material used which in the AI era is crucial):

The english translations have been in the past a notorious problem. They are not reliable and diverge from the truth in serious ways. I remember reading a piece by Pope Benedict, it went off the rails in a bad way, so bad I could not believe it, so I translated from a few other languages which were thankfully accurate. Sadly, Leo is condemned by his own mouth.

V.R.S.

@CatMuse
It is not the question of Engliah translations as this speech was in English originally.

I see, it's a question of the clarity of sound. Firstly, it sounds like this land and not Islam. Secondly, I'd hardly think Pope John Paul II would invoke the protection of St John the Baptist for the defence of Isalm. He had his head chopped off for defending marriage laws against the sins of those in power. The mere fact of polygamy in Islam would be unthinkable and totally unsupported by him.

V.R.S.

Yes, the clarity of voice/sound. I think that JPII, given he kissed the Quran, supported the construction of the great mosque in Rome and said many scandalous words about islam, would be able to say it, but in this speech it looks really out of context.
