HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) - Although Turkey claims it only attacks military facilities in areas held by the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria (AANES), some eight schools have been destroyed in the outskirts of Hasakah, northern Syria, due to the latest Turkish escalation.

"About 1,500 students have no access to education due to the destruction of their schools," Bahia Ma'amo, an official at the Tel Tamr school complex, said on Monday.

The latest Turkish escalation led to the destruction and closure of eight schools in the Tel Tamr area in the northern Hasakah hinterland, according to AANES education officials.

Ma'amo said the continued Turkish shelling caused hundreds of students to stay away from school as they feared for their lives.

Attacks on schools during conflict are among six grave violations identified and condemned by the UN Security Council.

Schools on the frontline with Turkey in the villages of al-Dardara, al-Bouida, Makhtala, al-Dabib, Sukar al-Ahimer, al-Sousa and Gozaliya north of Hasakah were closed.

Turkey and the Syrian armed opposition groups it supports, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), targeted electricity grids, council and municipal buildings in the village of Quboor al-Qarajneh, which serve dozens of villages north of the city, as well as churches and mosques in frontline villages.

Ma'amo told North Press that schools in the villages of al-Dabib and al-Ghaybish were partially destroyed, while schools in Gozeliya and al-Dardara were completely destroyed and are now out of service due to heavy weapons fire.

As the Turkish army and the SNA factions are stationed along a length of about 40 km around Tel Tamr, the residents of the villages on the front lines have been repeatedly attacked, despite the fact that Turkey has signed two ceasefire agreements.

Following the Turkish incursion in October 2019, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and one with the US, which stipulated the cessation of all hostilities and the withdrawal of the SDF 32 km from the Turkish border.

The SDF have withdrawn from the border areas as agreed, but Turkey continues to target the area.

Dozens of villages on the seam line surrounding Tel Tamr are almost empty, with residents fleeing to camps, safe villages and shelters in Tel Tamr and the town of Hasakah, according to officials from the town's municipal council.
