Bishop Cleared in Nun’s “Rape Case”

A court in Kottayam, India, has cleared former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, 54, accused of “raping a nun” between 2014 and 2016.

Mulakkal was arrested in 2018. The case sparked widespread protests after the nun belonging to the Missionaries of Jesus alleged that the Church had “ignored her complaints.”

The nun had alleged that the bishop had raped her 13 times when he visited her Kottayam convent in Kerala.

The January 14 decision stated that “the prosecution failed to prove all the charges against the accused." The nun's lawyers said they would challenge the verdict.
