New Director General of Legionaries of Christ
Fr. Carlos Gutiérrez López, 51, is a native of Hermosillo, Mexico, and was ordained a priest in 2009. He has served in Chile, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico.
The language surrounding his election reflects themes strongly associated with Pope Francis. The General Chapter entrusted him with continuing the Legionaries’ path of renewal, emphasizing transparency, care for persons, communion with the wider Church, and renewed outreach toward the “existential peripheries.”
The election marks the conclusion of the service of Fr. John Connor, LC, who has served as Director General since 2020. The General Chapter will now continue with the election of the General Government and further discernment on the congregation’s future.
