Leo XIV Appoints Brazilian Coadjutor Bishop: "Francis' Synod a True Blessing"

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr Milton Zonta, S.D.S., as coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Criciúma in Brazil.
Born on 2 June 1960 in Videira, Santa Catarina, he joined the Salvatorians and was ordained a priest on 17 January 1987.
He lived in Rome for 18 years, including 12 years (2012–2024) as Superior General of the Salvatorians. After two consecutive terms, he returned to live in his home diocese of Videira, Brazil, in 2024.
During public appearances, he usually wears civilian clothing.
In his first message today following his appointment, Monsignor Zonta expressed his desire for a "synodal spirit". He voiced his support for "a welcoming and missionary Church" and "the paths of synodality".
