July is the month of the Precious Blood. This detail from an extraordinary window from the Charnel Cloister of St Etienne du Mont in Paris is an allegorical image of the Church and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist through which grace and salvation flowing from the Blood of Christ is dispensed to faithful souls. In the top right, a priest is shown giving Communion to the faithful, and the label says: "All true Christians must receive with respect from the priests of the Church, but they must first have a contrite heart, and have their sins remitted [through Confession]." Under the figure of Christ, who is lying on a wine press, there are these two labels: "This wine press is the venerable Cross, where the Blood was the nectar of Life: the Blood by whom the King of Kings[...]" And "He was placed in reserved vessels. The teachers of the Church say, in order to wash away our sins, even of those committed by those yet to be born." And then, finally, on the bottom right: "Popes, Prelates, Princes, Kings, Emperors have placed it in the cellar reverently, this Wine of Life that wipes away errors, and that gives a holy hope to the soul."
