
The newspaper calls this problem a "taboo" and "unresolved" although the huge cost of the Vatican's administrative apparatus was already criticised during the 2013 conclave.
A 2014 hiring freeze was quickly bypassed. Francis has promised that - at least among the lay personnel - nobody will be fired. Therefore a quick solution of the problem is not in sight.
Francis’ liberal agenda has not helped the Vatican financies. Liberals are better at emptying churches than filling the Church's coffers with donations.
