After the May 26 general audience, Brazilian Father João Paulo Victor asked Francis to send a blessing to the Brazilians.
Francis was filmed replying with a smile, “There’s no salvation for you. Too much cachaça and no prayer.” Cachaça is a Brazilian sugarcane spirit with between 38-48% alcohol. The video went viral.
Now some humourless petty bourgeois are up in arms. One of them is the journalist and Rio de Janeiro lawyer Jorge Béja. He went sentimental asking Francis on JornalDaCidadeOnline.com.br to “apologise” after his “tough, untrue, cruel, and hurtful words.”
Béja addressed Francis directly, “Not even smiling, not even kidding, not even in a hilarious way, on no account and by no means you could say what you said.” Judging from this embarrassing outrage, Francis must have been right.

Notice Francis didn't condemn Brazil for their rampant hedonism and sexual deviancy, both of which are far more prevalent than "Cachaça" :P

In this rare instance I think Bergoglio’s joshing is kinda cute. You know he himself imbibes.
