What his father saw was a fake moon landing. Of course the Government realized that if the landing failed, there would be serious national and international repercussions. So, they had a backup. That does not prove that there was no attempted moon landing which may have succeeded. Maybe it didn't succeed and they used the fake footage. The one thing which is not possible is that they did not try to go to the moon.
