What’s Going on in Francis' Diplomatic Corps?

Every summer, until mid-July, the transfer of nuncios, promotions of councillors, and recruitment for the Vatican diplomatic corps were announced - this year, nothing, Filippo Di Giacomo noted on (August 13).

In 2020 the Pontifica Accademia Ecclesiastica graduated 16 students, but only four were accepted into the diplomatic service.

In the past, Vatican diplomacy was known for its excellence. Now, accoding to Di Giacomo, to make a Holy See diplomatic career, three requirements are needed: to be Polish or from a culturally neighbouring country, to follow ecclesiological options of the past (sic!), and to be a regular participant at the 'beer club' run by Bishop Jan Pawłowski, 60, head of the section for diplomatic personnel.

Di Giacomo says that 95% of the new nuncios meet these requirements and are under 50 years of age, i.e. will be around for at least another 25 years.
