Absurd: Vatican Allows General "Absolution" Due To Coronavirus Panic
Vatican Penitentiary Major, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, ruled on March 20 that, due to the Coronavirus panic, bishops can offer general "absolutions" instead of confessions.
Piacenza knows that general "absolution" is only permitted when there is an “imminent danger of death” or a “grave necessity” (Canon 961).
He believes the “grave necessity” occurs in places most affected by the virus.
However, a general “absolution” is no sacrament, only an invocation that can be replaced with any personal act of contrition. The sins must be confessed later (Canon 962). Further, there is no venue to impart general "absolutions" as the churches are closed.
