The most likely truth is that there were always “plausibly deniable” suspicions, that were never sufficiently investigated, likely due to the money that old “Blanche” brought in. The corruption has to stop, and it, most likely, will only stop when worldly powers no longer care to wield influence in the Church. It doesn’t have to be so, but that would require saints in the positions of authority, and that will take divine intervention.
