"Authority is service: to lead men to God"

The task of governing the People of God which Christ entrusted to priests is a service, the service of the Gospel. The Pope said this today during the general audience catechesis in St. Peter's Square, before 40 thousand faithful. The authority of priests working in the Church, in fact, has a single purpose:
Benedict XVI: "to lead man to God, to reawaken the faith, to raise mankind from inertia and desperation, and infuse the hope that God is close and guides the history of individuals and of the world."
Every pastor, Benedict XVI said, is the means through which Christ loves mankind. The hierarchy in the Church, explained the Pope, is not a domination, as public opinion influenced by careerism and the abuse of authority throughout history may assert, but has a "sacred origin, the authority which comes from Christ, in obedience to Him. Even the Pope, then, "cannot do what he wants, but is the guardian of obedience to Christ, and to His Word."
