Antiochian Orthodox Metropolitan Joseph Al-Zehlaoui, 71, has resigned as Archbishop of New York and all of North America (Antiochian.org, September 17).
Al-Zehlaoui is expected to "spend the remainder of his life in peace and repentance."
The resignation follows August allegations of a 16-year affair with a married woman that allegedly led to the woman's divorce. The incident came to light because the woman went public.
Liberal OrthodoxyInDialogue.com attempts to justify fornication by saying that the “supreme twist of irony (or not)” is that the fornicator was known “as an inflexibly rigid demander of sexual morality in the Antiochian Archdiocese.”

It’s not the first time something like this has happened with an Orthodox bishop. Anthimos of Boston (Greek Orthodox) was abusing the daughter of one of his priests. He was moved to Denver in 1983.
