The path of Apophis as it comes near Earth…and its likeliest contact point. On Oklahoma Facebook, there’s been discussion about loud sonic booms blasting through the sky this week. The speculation is understandable. Since March, reports of fireballs and sonic booms have been appearing with unusual frequency across the United States and beyond. Back in March, geophysicist Stefan Burns began documenting what he regarded as an anomalous cluster of events. He pointed to fireballs and sonic booms reported from Louisiana (March 2nd), Washington (March 3rd), Germany (March 8th), Pennsylvania (March 9th), New York (March 11th), Ohio (March 17th), and Texas (March 21st). More recently, he highlighted a sonic boom in South Carolina on May 28th, another near Boston on May 30th, and a widely observed Michigan fireball on June 1st.
