Synod Proposes Consulting Non-Believers and Ex-Catholics in Bishop Selection
At least, the document also mentions Catholic criteria: “Among the qualities sought in a bishop are moral integrity, doctrinal orthodoxy, pastoral sensitivity, leadership ability, and the capacity to administer the Church’s goods.” (page 3)
The main idea of the report is expanding lay influence in bishop selection: “The cathedral chapter… finance council… lay council… youth and the poor should also be convened.” (page 4)
The report proposes that, when a diocese is vacant, a committee be established to work with the Apostolic Nuncio, consisting of priests, consecrated religious, and laypersons. (page 5)
Informants should include women, youth, academics, ecclesial movement members, the poor, marginalized persons, and representatives of Indigenous or minority communities.
The most controversial phrase is this: “It is also possible to hear from individuals representing civil society and the cultural sphere, as well as those who do not profess faith or have left ecclesial practice.”
This final report is only nine pages long. The study group is still continuing work on the remaining topics, which include:
- The judicial function of bishops
- The nature/structure of
- Formation of bishops
