Francis Praises - Or Mocks? - The Mantilla

Francis received on March 18 Spain’s new ambassador to the Holy See, the leftwing activist and former education minister Isabel Celaá, who has been contested for her homosexualist and anti-family stances.

Following protocol, Celaà was dressed in black wearing a mantilla. Francis commented off protocol: “Thank you very much for coming with your peineta.”

In the Hispanic world, Peineta is the decorative comb worn under the mantilla, a lace head covering.
