Raphael‘s charming cherubs
The whole world knows the two charming cherubs, looking slightly bored, but gracing everything imaginable. They started their own world-wide “career” in the 19th century but their home is in Dresden (originally it was in Piacenza, Italy). tourismsaxony

The Sistine Madonna , a painting by Raphael , dates back to this period which was placed inside the church. The building was consecrated in 1514 [4] , despite this the construction works were prolonged for some time and the facade was completed only at the end of the sixteenth century [1] . In this period the church was particularly dear to the Duchess Margherita of Austria , consort of the Duke of Parma and Piacenza Ottavio Farnese , who was buried inside the church after his death [1] .

In the mid- eighteenth century a flood damaged many of the lands under the monastery and caused the need to finance works to reinforce the banks of the river Po ; to meet this need in 1754 the Abbot Benedetto Vittorio Caracciolo gave the Sistine Madonna to the Elector Augustus III of Saxony , who transferred it to Germany [4] . In 1803, however, the manuscript of the Angilberga Psalter [5] was donated to the French governor Moreau de Saint Méry .

The Benedictine monks maintained the church until 1809, when they were driven out by Napoleon Bonaparte , who also confiscated the wealth they owned. On this occasion, while the convent was converted into a barracks, the church, which had been briefly used in previous years to house the troops [6] , kept its intended use, becoming the parish seat to the detriment of the church of Santa Maria di Borghetto, which had previously been subject to the authority of the abbots of San Sisto. The confirmation of the establishment of the new parish took place in 1813 by Pope Pius VII [1] .
