No Alliance Between Erdő and Parolin

Hungary's Ambassador to the Holy See, Eduard von Habsburg, has responded on X.com to speculation that Cardinal Péter Erdö, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, had entered into a pre-conclave agreement with former Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Von Habsburg called this "completely false", stating that "Cardinal Erdö did not take part in such discussions".

Pre-conclave pacts are forbidden by the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis (1996) in which John Paul II reaffirmed that any prior commitment between cardinals with regard to the papal election is null and void and forbidden under penalty of excommunication.

But the cardinals know that this draconic prohibition is not to be taken very seriously.

The Cardinal himself may not have taken part in any such discussions directly and personally….but his “water carriers” certainly may have. It is very likely that someone or some group in his circle could have engaged in such clandestine, Machiavellian and illegal activities. You just can’t discount such a thing happening, given the history of Vatican intrigues during Papal elections and the extremely high stakes that are in play with this one.
