“I Need a Strict Church” - Giovanna Discovers the Traditional Latin Mass

Giovanna is 27-years-old and engaged to Stefano, also 27. Both are somewhat practicing Catholics. Quote, “But we often move away from prayer and are a sometimes confused about our life and our choices as a couple.” Writing on AldoMariaValli.it, Giovanni revealed that the couple recently discovered the Traditional Latin Mass.

No Solemnity, No Recollection

Early November, Giovanna and Stefano returned to Mass after a period of absence. They went to their parish, but instead of finding relief and spiritual guidance, they left nervous and tired. The priest gave a very long and inconclusive sermon. The nun who directed the chants was so much out of tune that those present started giggling. The Confirmation boys were animating the Mass, but there were only three of them, one disguised as a Halloween skeleton. In short: no solemnity, no recollection.

Everything in Latin

So, Giovanna proposed to attend a Traditional Latin Mass. The couple chose a church of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X in the centre of Rome near the Colisseum. The women were all veiled, the men in suits, and the priests and altar boys dressed as in certain 19th century paintings, Giovanna writes. After Mass, Stefano was almost angry: "Everything in Latin,” he ranted, “you don't understand anything, zero participation, always kneeling nobody knows why, all sung, almost two hours, senseless homilie.” He vowed that he would never go back.

The Homily Hit Her

Giovanna’s experience was totally different. Quote, “I was happy. I was inexplicably moved: Even though I didn’t understand the Latin chants, they rose with such grace to heaven that I was sure that my prayers were going up with them.” The homily hit Giovanna like a slap but simultaneously gave her great relief because the priest reminded the faithful that – quote – “you must die,” and “you will be judged.” He admonished the faithful to live righteously “so that God can welcome you when the time comes.”

Strict Teachers Care About their Students

Why was Giovanna relieved? She explains, “In school, the strict teachers were my favourite.” She feared them, but also liked them, because in the long run she understood that they were the ones who cared about the students. The kinder teachers were often indifferent, and their high grades didn’t offer much satisfaction. Giovanna concludes, “I think I need a strict Church that points the finger at my mistakes so that I can correct them. I am not so good and strong that I can do it alone.”

I prefer a Church of substance. If there is substance, a certain amount of strict obligations will follow.

The women were all veiled, the men in suits…..

Speaking of suits, who is the man in the white suit? 🤔

I don’t know but he’s the one sitting in the left seat. 😲
