Lead up to the Sanctus.

This video is designed to show choirs when to sing the Sanctus at the Traditional Mass (the Missal of 1962, Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite).

The priest has sung the Preface, and there is a sung dialogue between the priest and the congregation (led by the schola), before the schola sings the Sanctus. A Chant Sanctus and Benedictus is sung in full, without a break; a polyphonic Sanctus is separated from the Benedictus, which is sung after the Consecration of the Chalice.

The tone used for the dialogue is the 'Most Solemn Tone' (Tonus Solemnior), which is appropriate for solemn occasions. It can be found in the Liber Usualis p110. The Sanctus sung here is from Mass IV.

This Solemn Mass was celebrated to mark the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Church of St Anthony of Padua, Headley Way, Oxford, on 16th June 2011 (Whit Thursday). It was celebrated by Fr Aldo Tapparo, parish priest; the deacon was Br Nicholas Edmonds-Smith and the subdeacon Fr Anton Webb, both of the Oxford Oratory.

Mass was accompanied by the Schola Abelis: please visit our blog and consider giving us a donation! More on this Mass here.
