Saint Sabas the Sanctified |Founder of Holy Monasteries | Feast Day: December 5 | Catechism for Kids
Saint Sabas the Sanctified (439–532 AD) was one of the greatest early monks of the Church and a major leader of Eastern Christian monasticism. Born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey), he entered monastic life as a young boy and grew into a wise, peaceful, and deeply holy man. Saint Sabas travelled to Palestine and founded several monasteries, including the famous Great Lavra of Saint Sabas (Mar Saba) in the Kidron Valley. This monastery is still active after over 1,500 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world. The monks there still follow many of the ancient customs he established! Sabas spent much of his life in prayer, fasting, silence, and service. Kings, bishops, and emperors came to him for wisdom because of his strong faith and gentle heart.
