They thought they would, as usual, use bombs to bring about a quick “democracy” in Iran. And they have fallen into a trap from which there is no good way out. They believed they could replace the Iranian government with the son of the Shah, whom the Iranians hated and had overthrown. None of these fantasies have come true. Instead, a war has broken out that they cannot end whenever they want. The Iranian Embassy in Spain has hung a banner depicting the murdered elementary schoolgirls from Minab and condemning the U.S.-Israeli attack on that school. Trump may well declare the war over, but it will not end until Iran is also willing to do so. Iran’s most modest demand is the lifting of economic sanctions.
