Confirmed: Bishop Forbids Latin, Ad Orientem, Kneeling at Communion, St Michael Prayer

A draft letter about liturgy written by Bishop Michael Martin of Charlotte, North Carolina, but not yet issued to his clergy, was published on Rorate-caeli.Blogspot.com on 28 May. Monsignor Martin became infamous internationally for almost abolishing the Roman Rite in his diocese. Below are some key excerpts of the draft letter [no matter how factually wrong].
On Latin
- In some places in our diocese, there tends to be a recurring tendency to attempt to reclaim the rubrics, actions and sensibilities of the 1962 Missal or pre-Vatican II liturgical customs, and to implement them in the celebration of the Novus Ordo Missae. This can also extend to art, architecture, and other liturgical and 'para-liturgical' celebrations.
- In the Diocese of Charlotte, I have encountered the frequent and prevalent use of Latin in parish liturgies. The faithful's full, conscious and active participation is hindered wherever Latin is used.
- The Church does not call for the Latin language to be used widely …More

To be clear, the altar rail is one of the most ancient "sanctuary appurtenances" in the Church. The Eastern ikonostasis grew out of the altar rail.

Trashes the use of Latin. Has Latin in his coat of arms.

It’s a terrible situation the people of Charlotte are going through. They had 49 seminarians, and if he has his way, it’ll be 2 in short order. They really do want to artificially starve the flock.

Is this written by a sane Catholic mind? Asking for a friend...

I wonder whether he can read Latin.

Malki Tzedek

At the very least, he doesn't know how to read "the signs of the times" Luke 12:56

giveusthisday

He doesn't seem to have heard of a Communion Rail, and in another post (maybe from the article cited here)he makes it clear that to him, reverence for the Church and her Liturgies is anathama.

I just read the WHOLE letter of which the story only mentions a few points! It's "back to the future" mandating the liturgical sensibilities of the 1960s & 70s. I won't and have no desire to recount everything this micro-managing "bishop" demands, but it's the entire stupid liberalism of the modernist Vatican II crowd that I experienced first hand during my stint in seminary - i.e. the hatred towards any piety. NO kneeling, Rosary, reverence, tradition, statues, sacred art/music, etc.

A wolf dressed up as a Fake Conventual Franciscan and bishop! He is in no way a Roman Catholic !

Wonder when he will require pagan earth goddess statues.

Perhaps the bishop should rather reflect on clerical despotism. Who is he serving? Certainly not his flock

Mike Paul Smith

He should be cancelled & run out of town. Another bloody clueless Vatican 2 apostate. If they hate the Catholic faith so much, let them go & start their own Protestant sect, but don’t let them destroy The Holy Catholic Church.

jobina

Is he needed in Charlotte?

Dr. Bobus

He's following the Francis mantra: Make a mess!

Charles Dracoe

Is this guy really a priest?!

Darrell J Roman

No, not even a true Roman Catholic!

Hmm, you'd think somebody who's name is "Michael" would WANT to say the St. Michael prayer after Mass. Well, not if you're a vicious opponent of the Catholic religion . . .

Traditional Catholics Continue to be Persecuted Under "Pope Leo" –

@ArchofDet, appointed by Pope Francis in February, announced on April 16 that the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) can no longer be celebrated after July 1 in all parishes in the archdiocese, except for a single Shrine in the city of Detroit.
Please REPOST this as a call to prayer for discernment. "

"The devil has always attempted, by means of the heretics, to deprive the world of the Mass, making them precursors of the Anti-Christ, who, before anything else, will try to abolish and will actually abolish the Holy Sacrament of the altar, as a punishment for the sins of men, according to the prediction of Daniel,' And strength was given him against the continual sacrifice' (Daniel 8:12)." What in the world is a "communion bench"? I've never heard the term before. Could the bishop mean a prie-dieu or single kneeler (not part of a pew) or a section of altar rail? Bench to me means something you SIT on, so NO Catholics don't sit for Holy Communion!

Sophie Gambardella

In my experience (N.E. United States), 'The Communion Bench' or Pew refers to the first row of pews which is left empty and used for those people who wish to receive kneeling when the altar rail has been removed from a church.

Mike the Pike

This picture might be a "communion bench". Found it on Google Maps in the church (St Mark in Huntersville) that Bishop Martin wanted to make his cathedral.

I would be morally uncomfortable even just living in the same city with such a monster as this vile bishop. He is, of course, a servant of Satan.

Your response is as it should be. We have the examples of the Saints:
One day, St. John the Apostle went inside a public bathhouse, but quickly spotted Cerinthus, a public heretic, inside. St. John immediately ran out of the building, exclaiming to those with him, “Let us fly, lest even the bath-house fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within!” (Against Heresies, 3.3.4)
St. Polycarp met at Rome the heretic Marcion in the streets, who resenting that the holy bishop did not take that notice of him which he expected, said to him, "Do you not know me, Polycarp?" "Yes," answered the saint, "I know you to be the firstborn of Satan."

Malki Tzedek

We have reached a very sorry state in the Church when our hierarchy thinks these are the most essential matters to be attended to in leading their flock into a more intimate relationship with our Lord. "...thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls" indeed.

yuca2111

This only confirms what we already knew, the wilderness is real and running away from persecution is a must.

mccallansteve

To the bishop, kneeling shows reverence towards God and he will not tolerate that.

"Many of our congregation simply walk away when they don’t understand the language." -- Bishop Marin
Thank you for explaining, Bishop, what happened when the people said: "Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison" during the liturgy. The Greek words sent all the laity, religious, and clergy away after the Vatican II "reforms".
