Normally, someone not going to Communion follows the line as it leaves the pew, gets out of the way, and allows those behind them to pass by (the stand of shame). Then they return to the pew, ideally collecting their effects and moving to the furthest point back in the pew from where those returning will sit. At least that's how it's done at various traditionalist parishes where a number of parishioners are very scrupulous about their spiritual standing.

At most Novus Ordo parishes, this isn't an issue.Everybody goes to Communion.
