Saint John Berchmans lived between 1599 till 1621 and was born in Flanders in Belgium. He was the eldest of five children to a shoemaker. Before the age of seven, he would rise early in the morning to serve at two or three masses a day. He made a custom of making the Stations of the Cross on Fridays while barefoot. His mother suffered from an illness when he was 9 years old and he tended to her until she died. He enrolled in a Jesuit college as well as the Society of the Blessed Virgin and prayed her Office daily. He believed that "If I do not become a saint when I am young, I shall never become one" and he began his priestly formation with the Jesuits. At the age of 22 he died while he studied for his seminary in Rome.
