Yes they could. As you would correctly imagine, this is not a new problem. Soldiers have been wearing metal helmets since ancient Greece in very hot climates. The solution isn't to line the helmet, but to cover the head.with (drum roll) an "arming cap"

These were used throughout the middle ages and renaissance to provide protection both from stout blows and insulation from the sun-heated metal.

As I just discovered, these helmets are already lined with felt to prevent this problem.

How can a cloth lined helmet burn a guard's ears? It can't. Meaning, as with so much of this Papacy, the official reason is a lie. The real reason is metal helmets are heavy and these "soldiers" don't like having that weight on their heads all day while they stand around in silly costumes doing nothing.
