Bishop Bernard Fellay, the superior general of the Society of Saint Pius X has told the German weekly Tagespost (June 28) that Cardinal Gerhard Müller wanted his group to be excommunicated but Francis refused.
Fellay is still optimistic about an agreement with the Vatican, “The reconciliation will come.”
He said that conservative bishops want the Society to be recognized but the [rich but faithless] German bishops are very hostile.
The Society's relationship with Pope Francis is “very good”, Fellay believes.
He presented a handwritten document by Pope Francis which starts with the words “Cher Frère, cher fils” – “Dear brother, dear son”.
The Society will hold its fourth general chapter on July 11-21. The most important item on the agenda is the election of the superior general. Many believe that Fellay will again be elected.

Dear Bishop Fellay, I think I would hold off for a bit if I were you.

I wish that some Catholics in the Novus Ordo, would be less rigid in their adherence to all sorts of novelties and Protestant elements, and more open to Catholic tradition.

SSPX needs to do something because until they start opening to certain things (e.g. Medjugorje) I do not see how people can attend. I love the Latin Mass but the community is rigid.

The SSPX began with full canonical status and no requirement to adhere to the pastoral administration of Vatican II from Rome. It is only just that the their regular faculties be restored to its original form. The Pope knows this is the right thing to do.

One and a half months later, Cardinal Müller decided to revise the text and demand a clearer acceptance of the Council [Vatican II] and the legitimacy of the Holy Mass [Novus Ordo Missae]. One and a half months later, Cardinal Müller decided to revise the text and demand a clearer acceptance of the Council [Vatican II] and the legitimacy of the Holy Mass [Novus Ordo Missae]. First of all, we opened discussion channels, then they blocked them. What do you really want from us? This is where the devil works. It is a spiritual fight.”

Do you personally trust Francis?

"We have a very good relationship. If we let him know that we are in Rome, this door is open. He is always helping us on a smaller scale. For example, he told us, "I have problems when I do something good for you. I help Protestants and Anglicans - why can not I help the Catholics? " Some want to prevent the agreement. We are a disruptive factor in the church. The Pope stands in between.”
