Seven Week Challenge to Conquer Technological Idolatry.
Lent is coming. It is time to become that grain of wheat that dies and produces much fruit. Lent is about 6 weeks long, but why wait. Start now. So, today I suggest taking a 7 week challenge, or 8 week if you start today, which I hope you do. And I have something particular in mind to forego for 7 weeks, namely what Aldous Huxley (author of Brave New World) called “higher idolatry.” He writes: “The many varieties of higher idolatry may be classed under three main heads: technological, political, and moral.” Today I would like to focus on the “Technological idolatry” of which he says “is the most ingenious and primitive of the three, for its devotees, like those of the lower idolatry, believe that their redemption and liberation depend upon material objects—in this case gadgets…” Although we may not consider various gadgets, devices and technology as important as he is implying, the point is that in many place lots of emphasis is …More
